Award winning Green Builder shares energy reduction strategies

Builder/developer  Martha Rose has been building at the rigorous 5-Star level of the Master Builder’s Built Green program since its inception  in 2005. Rose is a builder that embraces sustainability, in constant pursuit of new products and technologies to raise the bar on home performance.

Fish Singer Place, the newest enclave of homes being built by Martha Rose Construction (MRC) are being designed and built to surpass the energy efficiencies of their last community of homes which had an E-Scale rating of 33, indicating that the home is approximately 67% more energy efficient than a typical code built new home. The E-Scale is based on the well-established Home Energy Rating System (HERS Index) established by RESNET the Residential Energy Services Network.

Rose’s drive to achieve more comes from her studing the Passivhaus  system last summer, an approach that results in a structure that requires almost no space heating. The first Passivhaus was built in Germany in 1990, and more than 6,000 have been built in Europe.

When asked, Martha Rose laughs, and “admits that the German Passivhaus is a sort of private benchmark.” Using techinques from the Passivhause program, starting with an airtight building envelope, a super insulation package (R-28 walls & R-63 ceiling), high-performance Serious 925  windows, and a whole house heat recovery ventilation (HRV) system that exhaust the warm interior air with fresh cool outdoor air will all contribute to a very comfortable indoor environment while reducing heating and cooling cost.
